Meaning-Making Machines

this is what 
the Guru said:
humans are
meaning-making machines

to validate 
our spot on this marble
we are compelled to
confer meaning 

we hold every aspect of life
up to the light
turn it like a crystal
look for hidden rainbows

as though Existence
must earn its worth
perform for us
arrange itself over our cribs
like a mobile

hung there by
God
or Science
or my eighth grade boyfriend
